Dr. Melanie Johansson began her medical career at the age of 19 as a Navy EMT and Hospital Corpsman. She earned a scholarship to attend Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI, where she completed her undergraduate degree. After six years of serving as a Navy Labor and Delivery Nurse, she received another scholarship to attend medical school and earned her MD from Virginia Commonwealth University, Medical College of Virginia, in Richmond, VA. Dr. Johansson completed her residency in Emergency Medicine at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark, NJ. Her distinguished Navy career allowed her to live and work across the globe, with assignments in Guam, San Diego (twice), Bremerton, WA, Sicily, Southern Maryland, and Bethesda.
Dr. Johansson practices empathy-forward, whole-person, multimodal pain management. This approach treats the individual as a complete being—integrating physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual health—rather than focusing solely on symptoms or disease. Her goal is to understand and address the full spectrum of factors that influence a patient’s health and well-being. She employs a combination of interventional pain procedures, physical therapy, complementary treatments, lifestyle modifications, and medications to manage a wide range of pain conditions. These include musculoskeletal pain (such as arthritis, back and neck conditions, and joint pain), complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), Post traumatic stress disorder, and cancer-related pain. Dr. Johansson also performs a variety of procedures and minimally invasive surgical interventions, including spinal cord stimulation, vertebroplasty, basivertebral nerve ablation (Intracept® procedure).
Dr. Johansson has a wide range of interests. She is an accomplished baker and cook. She loves to spend time with her husband, Chad, and their Saluki, Atlas. They are hoping to add another Saluki to the family soon. She has three nieces and two nephews with whom she is close.
